Dear Edgewater Beach Neighbors,
The Commission on Chicago Landmarks is currently seeking public input on a proposal to landmark the Bryn Mawr Historic District, which runs from Sheridan to Broadway. The proposed designation would help preserve the district’s architectural heritage—from late 19th-century Victorian homes to 1920s high-rises that once welcomed travelers to Edgewater.
At a recent community meeting hosted by Edgewater Presbyterian Church, neighbors and city officials discussed the proposal’s cultural significance, practical implications, and long-term benefits.
This designation would protect the historic character of our neighborhood, ensuring that future development remains in harmony with its unique legacy. While preservation guidelines come with responsibilities, they also offer opportunities—such as potential grants or tax incentives—to support stewardship of these architectural treasures.
We encourage residents to learn more and share their perspectives with the Commission on Chicago Landmarks and the 48th Ward office.
